A fight broke out at a Cope media briefing with party members throwing fists at each other.
Disgruntled members arrived at the briefing in Boksburg earlier and demanded party president Mosiuoa Lekota not deliver the address.
The members say Lekota, who was suspended on Monday, has no right to address the party.
Lekota is being accused of sowing divisions and corruption within Cope.
Gauteng Cope acting-general secretary Mxolisi Ntombela said: “We are here to say that this factionalist that have been called here are not the real members of Cope.
“There are the people that are destroying Cope, these are the mafias… We [are] saying to him he has got no right to come here and address Cope.”
