‘No signal at Naturena’: Orlando Pirates fans celebrate going above Kaizer Chiefs

Orlando Pirates moved above Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership standings after securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United in Durban on Sunday afternoon.

Gamphani Lungu opened the scoring before Lebone Seema doubled the Buccaneers’ advantage. Daniel Msendami then completed the rout with his first goal in Pirates colours.

With Pirates leading 2-0, supporters called for one more goal to ensure their side moved above their Soweto rivals at the top of the table. Msendami answered the call, sealing a comfortable victory for Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side.

The result was the perfect response from the Buccaneers following their midweek 1-1 draw against AmaZulu.

Pirates also capitalised on Chiefs’ 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday. Both Soweto giants have now won two of their opening three league matches and drawn one, leaving them level on seven points, with Pirates sitting top thanks to their superior goal difference.

Pirates fans celebrate overtaking Chiefs

Pirates fans wasted little time celebrating the result on X, while also taking the opportunity to tease their rivals.

@Espoir_RSA wrote: “Pirates didn’t just climb the table, they took Chiefs’ WiFi too. No signal from Naturena.”

Another fan posted: “Orlando Pirates back on top of the table. Please check on the Kaizer Chiefs fans, maybe they’re still refreshing the standings hoping it’s a loading error.”

@_choene pointed out the tight race between the Soweto giants: “Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have both played three matches. Each won two and one is a draw, so they have the same number of points with Pirates at the top because of goal difference.”

Meanwhile, @VendaBoyRam brought up Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen while celebrating Pirates’ rise to the summit: “The more Orlando Pirates scores the more angry I get at Petersen. That bro really cost Kaizer Chiefs. Now Orlando Pirates is sitting on top.”

For Pirates, the emphatic victory not only restored momentum but also ensured they finished the weekend at the summit of the Betway Premiership.
