Pirates hit by injury ahead of Chippa, big returns boost squad
Orlando Pirates have suffered a blow ahead of Sunday’s Betway Premiership clash against Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.
The Buccaneers will again be without Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa, who have both been ruled out of the encounter. Midfielder Sihle Nduli is also a doubt after being forced off early during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against AmaZulu.
The injuries come at an unfortunate time for Pirates, who are looking to bounce back after dropping two points against Usuthu.
There is, however, some positive news for the defending champions. Kabelo Dlamini and Masindi Nemtajela are close to returning and have travelled with the squad to Durban, according to the club statement. New striker Sebastian Pedersen could also provide another attacking option, while Sifiso Luthuli is also available for selection.
Pirates have collected four points from their opening two league matches. They remain unbeaten and will be determined to keep that record intact against a Chippa side still searching for its first win.
Pirates defender Nkosikhona Ndaba believes better finishing could make the difference. “If we can improve our finishing and make the most of the opportunities we create, we can win a lot more games,” said Ndaba.
Chippa coach Brandon Truter sees the match as an important test. “We are facing the champions. That is motivation in itself for the players to put their best foot forward,” said Truter.
Pirates have dominated this fixture in recent seasons. They are chasing a sixth consecutive league victory over Chippa.
Kick-off is at 15:00 on Sunday at Kings Park Stadium. Tickets are available at TicketPro, and selected Spar and Jet outlets.
