The Betway Premiership returns with a packed weekend of action, headlined by a heavyweight clash between two of South Africa’s biggest football clubs, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The weekend programme actually features eight matches, beginning with Friday night’s encounter between Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, with kick-off scheduled for 7.30pm.
The spotlight, however, will fall firmly on FNB Stadium when league leaders Chiefs welcome Sundowns at 3pm on Saturday in what promises to be one of the early highlights of the 2026/27 campaign.
Chiefs have made an impressive start to the new season, winning both of their opening league matches. The Amakhosi began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Milford FC before following that up with a 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.
The two victories have given Chiefs maximum points and early momentum, but they face a much tougher examination against Sundowns, who will be determined to close the gap at the top of the table.
Sundowns, meanwhile, have played only one league match so far after their opening fixture against Marumo Gallants was postponed. The Brazilians eventually got their campaign underway on Tuesday night with a 3-2 victory over TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium.
A victory over Chiefs would give Sundowns another valuable three points and strengthen their challenge for the title, while Chiefs will be looking to maintain their perfect start.
Limpopo derby takes centre stage
Saturday will also see a highly anticipated Limpopo derby, although the fixture order has been reversed from the originally stated arrangement.
Sekhukhune United will host Polokwane City at Seshego Stadium in Polokwane at 5.30pm. The match is one of the provincial derbies highlighted by the Premier Soccer League on its official 2026/27 fixture calendar.
Sekhukhune will be eager to bounce back from their defeat to Chiefs, while Polokwane City will be looking to build momentum after their midweek 3-3 draw against Stellenbosch FC.
There will also be a KwaZulu-Natal derby at Chatsworth Stadium, where Durban City entertain Richards Bay at 8pm.
Durban City come into the encounter after a goalless draw against Golden Arrows on Wednesday, while Richards Bay were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United on Tuesday.
At the same time, Milford FC will host Kruger United at Richards Bay Stadium at 8pm. The match will give Milford an opportunity to recover from their 2-0 defeat to Chiefs in their opening match, while Kruger United will be looking for a positive result after their goalless draw against Marumo Gallants.
Earlier on Saturday, AmaZulu will entertain Siwelele at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium in Durban at 3pm. AmaZulu will be seeking to build on their midweek 1-1 draw with defending champions Orlando Pirates, while Siwelele will be hoping to respond after losing 1-0 to Milford.
Pirates return to action on Sunday
Defending champions Orlando Pirates will round off their weekend league programme on Sunday when they travel to face Chippa United at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium in Durban at 3pm.
The Buccaneers were held to a 1-1 draw by AmaZulu on Wednesday and will be determined to return to winning ways as they continue the defence of their title.
There is also a second Sunday fixture, with TS Galaxy hosting Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium at 5.30pm. Galaxy will be looking to recover from their narrow 3-2 defeat to Sundowns, while Arrows come into the match after drawing 0-0 with Durban City.
With eight matches spread across the country, the weekend promises another important chapter in the early stages of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, with particular attention expected to be focused on the Chiefs-Sundowns battle at FNB Stadium.
