The Betway Premiership returns to centre stage this evening with four matches scheduled across the country, with defending champions Orlando Pirates facing one of their first major tests of the new campaign.
The Buccaneers travel to KwaZulu-Natal for a 7.30pm meeting with AmaZulu at the Kings Park Stadium, while Kaizer Chiefs will also be hoping to make a winning return to league action when they host Sekhukhune United at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
The other two matches will see Milford FC entertain Siwelele at Richards Bay Stadium, while Durban City face KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows in a provincial derby at the ChatsworthStadium. All four matches kick off at 7.30pm.
Pirates face Usuthu challenge
All eyes will be on Orlando Pirates as the champions begin their title defence away from home against AmaZulu.
The Sea Robbers opened their league campaign in impressive fashion, beating newly promoted Milford FC 2-0, and will now be looking to maintain that momentum against an AmaZulu side that will have home advantage.
The challenge for the Buccaneers is to show that their championship-winning form has not disappeared with the start of a new season.
Patrick Maswanganyi and Oswin Appollis are among the players to watch for Pirates. Appollis finished the previous Premiership campaign with nine goals and six assists, while Maswanganyi remains one of the most dangerous man in the squad.
Pirates have scored two goals so far this season and are yet to concede.
For AmaZulu, the pressure will be on their attacking players to find the back of the net after their opening-day defeat to Stellenbosch left them without a league goal.
Chiefs want to put MTN8 disappointment behind them
At FNB Stadium, Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to put a smile back on the faces of their supporters following their disappointing MTN8 exit.
Amakhosi were knocked out by Golden Arrows, who produced a 1-0 upset, and will now turn their attention back to the league when they welcome an unpredictable Sekhukhune United side.
Chiefs, however, made an excellent start to their league campaign, beating newly promoted Kruger United 3-1 away from home. They will therefore be keen to build on that result and avoid allowing the MTN8 disappointment to derail their league ambitions.
Sekhukhune also began the season positively, beating Durban City 1-0 at home.
That makes Wednesday night’s clash particularly interesting, with both sides arriving with three points from their opening league matches.
Mduduzi Shabalala will be one of the key players to watch for Chiefs. The attacking midfielder finished the 2025/26 Premiership campaign with five goals and four assists and possesses the creativity to unlock a disciplined Sekhukhune defence.
For Babina Noko, Bradley Grobler remains an important attacking threat, while Bright Ndlovu and Keletso Makgalwa will also be expected to contribute in the final third.
Chiefs have scored three goals so far this season, while Sekhukhune have scored one.
KZN derby promises fireworks
The evening’s other headline fixture takes place at Chatsworth Stadium, where Durban City host Golden Arrows in a battle for KwaZulu-Natal bragging rights.
Durban City are still searching for their first league points after losing 1-0 to Sekhukhune United on the opening weekend, while Golden Arrows began their campaign with a goalless draw against Chippa United.
The derby therefore offers both teams an opportunity to register their first victory of the season.
Golden Arrows will enter the match with confidence after their surprise MTN8 victory over Chiefs, but Durban City will be determined to use home advantage to turn their fortunes around.
Neither side has scored in the league so far, with both teams having zero goals after their opening matches.
Milford face Siwelele test
Meanwhile, newly promoted Milford FC will be hoping to bounce back when they welcome Siwelele.
Milford endured a difficult introduction to top-flight football when they were beaten 2-0 by defending champions Pirates in their opening match.
They now have another opportunity to collect their first points against Siwelele, who also made an encouraging start by holding TS Galaxy to a 2-2 draw.
Siwelele have therefore scored two goals so far, while Milford are yet to find the net.
