Cricket South Africa is gradually ushering in a new generation of talent as the Proteas look to build greater depth and give promising young players an opportunity to establish themselves at international level.
Among the youngsters attracting attention is Nqobani Mokoena, the promising fast bowler who has been included in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming limited-overs tour of Namibia.
Mokoena’s selection is not for a Test series, as previously reported, but for a busy white-ball assignment that includes a T20 tri-series involving South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, followed by a three-match ODI series against Namibia.
The matches will be played in Windhoek from 28 August to 6 September 2026.
Fortuin to lead young Proteas
The Proteas squad will be captained by spinner Bjorn Fortuin, as the national selectors look to give younger players valuable international exposure.
Head coach Shukri Conrad has backed the approach, with several established players being rested ahead of a demanding international programme later in the year.
The Namibia tour will therefore provide an opportunity for a number of players to show that they are ready to take the next step in their international careers.
Mokoena is among those receiving their first ODI call-up, alongside Connor Esterhuizen and Jordan Hermann.
All-rounders Duan Jansen and Eathan Bosch have also received their first senior international call-ups.
Mokoena’s rapid rise
Mokoena, whose full name is Nqobani Handsome Mokoena, was born in Durban on 5 May 2006.
The right-arm fast-medium bowler has emerged as one of South Africa’s promising young seamers after progressing through the country’s Under-19 system.
He represented South Africa at the 2024 ICC Under-19 World Cup and has subsequently gained experience in domestic cricket with the Dolphins and Paarl Royals, as well as South Africa A.
His progress earned him a senior international opportunity in March 2026 when he made his T20I debut against New Zealand.
He made an immediate impression, taking 3-26 on debut as South Africa defeated New Zealand by seven wickets.
Mokoena has also shown that he can make a contribution with the bat. During the New Zealand series, he scored an unbeaten 26 off 20 balls in the third T20I.
Impressive SA20 campaign
Mokoena’s rapid development was also evident during the 2026 SA20 season, when he represented the Paarl Royals.
He claimed 13 wickets in 10 matches, performances that helped underline his potential and placed him among the young fast-bowling prospects to watch in South African cricket.
His ability to bowl with pace while also contributing lower down the batting order makes him an interesting prospect as South Africa continues to develop its next generation.
Youngsters knocking on the door
Mokoena’s selection is part of a broader effort by the Proteas to build depth ahead of a busy international calendar.
The tour of Namibia will give the youngsters an opportunity to experience international cricket away from home and to compete alongside more experienced players.
For Mokoena, the challenge will be to translate his promising domestic and T20 performances into the 50-over international format.
The selectors will also be watching how the young players handle the pressure of international cricket as South Africa continues to plan for major tournaments and series in the years ahead.
Proteas’ upcoming Namibia assignment
The Proteas will first compete in the T20 tri-series involving South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, beginning on 28 August 2026.
