Eleven people were killed and two others injured in three separate shootings across Cape Town from late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday.
Western Cape police have reinforced deployments in Langa, Khayelitsha and Gugulethu following the killings. Additional officers have also been sent to other areas identified as potential hotspots.
The shootings happened within hours of one another and left eight men and three women dead.
Five killed in Langa
The first shooting happened in Winnie Mandela Street, Phase 3, Langa, at about 10.45pm on Saturday.
Police said four men and a woman were shot dead at the scene.
About five minutes later, three men aged 25, 31 and 35 were killed in TR Section, Lingelethu West, Khayelitsha.
The two attacks left eight people dead within minutes.
Three killed in Gugulethu
A third shooting was reported at about 4.10am on Sunday in the Barcelona informal settlement in Gugulethu.
Police said two men and a woman were killed. Two other people were injured in the attack.
The three incidents brought the overnight death toll to 11.
Police have not announced any arrests and the motives behind the shootings remain under investigation.
Serious violent crime detectives investigating
Detectives from the Provincial Serious Violent Crimes Unit are investigating the three shootings.
Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said reinforcements had been deployed to the affected communities and other identified hotspots.
Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi is expected to visit the affected areas and oversee the deployments.
