Pitso Mosimane is reportedly set to make a sensational return as Bafana Bafana head coach. According to SoccerBeat, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has decided to appoint Mosimane as the successor to Hugo Broos.
An official announcement is believed to be imminent. SAFA had previously confirmed that its National Executive Committee (NEC) would meet on Saturday, 8 August, to ratify the recommendation for the new coach.
PITSO MOSIMANE SET TO BAFANA BAFANA
Broos officially left Bafana Bafana after more than five years in charge. The Belgian took over in May 2021 and transformed the national team into one of Africa’s most competitive sides.
Under Broos, South Africa won the bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He also guided South Africa to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team reached the knockout stages for the first time.
SAFA wanted to keep the experienced coach beyond the expiry of his contract. However, Broos decided against continuing with the national team.
The potential appointment of Mosimane would now give Bafana Bafana another highly decorated South African coach.
MOSIMANE BRINGS WINNING PEDIGREE
Mosimane has built one of the most impressive coaching resumes in African football.
He made his name at SuperSport United before taking charge of South Africa. He later joined Mamelodi Sundowns and created a domestic and continental dynasty.
During his time at Sundowns, Mosimane won five PSL titles and guided the club to the 2016 CAF Champions League trophy. That triumph made him the first South African coach to win the competition.
He then moved to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he added two more CAF Champions League titles to his collection and guided the club to two FIFA Club World Cup bronze medals.
Mosimane later coached in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, further expanding his international experience. A return to Bafana Bafana would therefore represent another major chapter in his career.
For SAFA, the decision would also signal a clear desire to maintain the momentum created during the Broos era while placing the national team in the hands of one of South Africa’s most successful coaches.
