Why your savings aren’t growing: Habits you can change

Saving money isn’t always about earning more—it’s often about recognising the small habits that quietly drain your finances.

According to Money Web, while an occasional treat or impulse purchase may seem harmless, repeated behaviours of misusing money can make it much harder to build financial security over time.

Spending without a budget

One of the biggest obstacles to saving is not knowing where your money goes. Without a budget, it’s easy to overspend on everyday expenses without realising the impact.

What you can do instead:

Track your income and expenses each month. A simple budgeting app or spreadsheet can help you identify unnecessary spending and allocate more money toward your savings goals.

Relying too heavily on credit

Credit cards can be useful financial tools, but carrying balances from month to month means paying interest that reduces your ability to save. High-interest debt can quickly become a major financial burden.

What to do instead:

  • Pay your credit card balance in full whenever you can.
  • Focus on paying off high-interest balances first.
  • Avoid using credit for everyday expenses.
  • Build an emergency fund.

Reducing debt frees up more of your income for saving and investing.

Making impulse purchases

Whether it’s a late-night online shopping spree or grabbing items you didn’t plan to buy, impulse spending can quickly derail your financial progress. These purchases may seem small in the moment, but they add up over time.

Before making a non-essential purchase, give yourself 24 hours to decide whether you truly need it. More often than not, the urge to buy will pass.

Not saving first

Most people wait until the end of the month to save whatever remains after paying bills and covering expenses. Unfortunately, there’s often very little left.

A more effective approach is to pay yourself first. Set up an automatic transfer to your savings account on payday, even if it’s a modest amount. Consistency is more important than the size of each contribution.

Building savings isn’t about perfection—it’s about making better financial decisions consistently.
