‘I’m not in Durban for holiday’: Ramahlwe Mphahlele

AmaZulu defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele says he is not in Durban for holiday and will fight for his place in the team.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender was released by the club at the end of last season.

At least 100 PSL players lost their jobs when clubs decided to offload them at the end of the 2021/22 season.

AmaZulu, Sekhukhune, Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United and Venda Football Academy led from the front, axing most of their senior players.

The 32-year-old is aware of the struggles of some of the players axed to find new clubs and has made it clear he is not taking his job lightly.

“I’m here to fight, help the team to do better, I’m not in the space to guide youngsters, I want to fight, I’m not here for holiday, they must know I want to play and give it all for the team,” Mphahlele told the media.

He has made two substitute appearances for the club since joining them earlier this month.

The former Moroka Swallows fullback revealed that he struggled to understand what prompted PSL teams to get rid of senior players. Some of them have yet to find new homes, including Happy Jele, Leonardo Castro, Daniel Akpeyi, Augustine Mulenga, and many others.

“I think for the first time in the PSL, we find players like Happy Jele and Daniel Akpeyi not having clubs. Good players, if you ask me.

“I don’t know, and I’ve been trying to put my head around it. I don’t know whether teams are trying to cut budgets or whether the MDC is feeding teams new players. I don’t know, man, these are good players,” he added.

He gave a word of advice to his peers still looking for teams.

“For me, they must keep faith in God. Maybe teams are coming up with new culture to do things. I hope it gets better.”
