Cape Town Drivers Warned About Traffic Fine Scam

Posted on August 6, 2026

Cape Town motorists have been warned to watch out for a traffic fine scam that is once again targeting drivers across the metro.

The scam uses emails or text messages to pressure people into paying an alleged fine within 24 hours. The message may also threaten legal action if the payment is not made.

The City of Cape Town says residents should not rush to pay or share personal information before checking whether the notice is real.

How genuine traffic fine notices are sent

According to the City’s Traffic Services spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs, official infringement notices in Cape Town are sent by post and MMS. Follow-up reminders may also be sent by SMS.

A legitimate notice should include an image of the traffic fine. It should also provide links to official online platforms where motorists can view the fine, check its details and make payment.

The City has urged drivers to carefully examine every notice before clicking a link or entering banking or personal details.

Check the location and photograph

Motorists should confirm whether they were in the area listed on the notice on the date of the alleged offence.

They should also study the photograph attached to the fine and compare the vehicle details. Any information that does not match should be treated as a warning sign.

Drivers who remain unsure can visit their nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre or another official fine payment point. Staff can help confirm whether the fine is valid.

What to do if you were scammed

People who believe they have already paid a fake fine or shared information with scammers should act quickly.

The City has advised victims to open a fraud case with the South African Police Service.

Motorists should also avoid responding to messages that create panic through short deadlines or legal threats. Taking a few minutes to verify a notice could prevent financial loss and stop personal details from falling into the wrong hands.

The warning comes as scammers use urgent messages to make fake payment demands appear convincing. Cape Town drivers are encouraged to check first and pay only through verified channels.
