Mokwena Sidesteps Tau-Ahly Exit Talk

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rulani Mokwena has refused to be drawn into speculation surrounding Percy Tau’s future amid talk he will leave Al Ahly.

Tau was reported to have seen his contract terminated by the Egyptian giants early this week, but this website was informed it was not the case.

However, he could still leave the club with the Egyptian giants looking to overhaul the squad after missing out on the CAF Champions League and Egyptian Premier League titles.

With Bongani Zungu returning to the club after his spell in Europe, there have been suggestions that Tau could well be the next player returning to the DStv Premiership, should he not find a suitable next move.

But Mokwena says he’s not ready to entertain any of that talk as, from his understanding, Tau is still contracted to the Red Devils, a club they respect.

“I don’t know much about Percy being unsettled. An incredible human being, top, top kid and very good football player, I don’t know if he’s unsettled, I can’t speak about him because I don’t think officially Al Ahly has made a statement on Percy,” Mokwena said at the MTN8 quarter-final pre-match press conference.

“He’s not a free player or free agent and because he belongs to a club we have huge respect for, it becomes very difficult to comment.

“But [if] you want to ask me about the person? I think you know. [If] you wanna ask me about the footballer? You know my opinion. But I will refrain from talking about Percy because he belongs to another club.”

The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana star scored 24 goals and registered 27 assists in 102 games during his time with the Brazilians before landing a move to Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion in 2018.
