South African Olympic swimming champ Chad le Clos revealed yesterday, 4 August 2026, that his Cape Town home was destroyed in the recent Table Mountain fires that swept through his apartment block. He was competing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow at the time of the incident.

The 34-year-old shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional statement posted to Instagram, saying the blaze broke out on the evening of 30 July—just one day after he became the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history. He won three medals, taking his all-time tally to 21.
Chad le Clos shares devastating loss
In his statement, Chad said: “It has taken me a while to process this heartbreaking tragedy. On the evening of 30 July, whilst breaking the all-time Commonwealth record, a fire started in my apartment block, which quickly spread to my home. Sadly, my home—where I’ve lived for more than a decade—burnt down, and there is nothing left to salvage.”

The fire tore through the apartment building in Sea Point, Cape Town, destroying multiple units. Tragically, one of Chad’s long-time neighbours lost his life in the blaze.
He also extended his condolences to the victim’s family and expressed solidarity with fellow residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
Despite suffering a personal loss, the swimmer announced that the Chad le Clos Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to assist affected residents as they begin rebuilding their lives.
“100% of any donations raised will go solely to my neighbours, with the Chad le Clos Foundation managing the proceeds to ensure they are looked after.”
The tragedy may have overshadowed a significant sporting achievement, as he secured his 21st Commonwealth medal when South Africa won bronze in the men’s 4x100m medley relay.
