The future of Percy Tau at Al Ahly has again come under the spotlight amid reports that Al Ahly have parted ways with the South African star forward.
Several media outlets in South Africa (SuperSport) and Egypt (FilGoal and KingFut) have this Tuesday morning been awash with reports that Tau has left the Cairo-based team, barely months after he signed from Brighton and Hove and Albion in the United Kingdom, where he struggled for game-time.
However, FARPost’s sources in Egypt football circles expressed surprise with reports insisting that the former Mamelodi Sundowns player was still with the Cairo-based former CAF Champions League kings.
“…Our sources from the club say Percy is still there at Al Ahly. However, you never know because when such things happen or are about to happen, the club will always wait until they make an official announcement.
“It was the same case when Pitso Mosimane was about to leave. You never know these publications that have published this might have direct links with the player,” Ahmed Attah, a football pundit at OnTime Sports sports channel in Egypt, tells FARPost.
Another top Egyptian sports journalist Tarek Talaat told FARPost that Al Ahly management had confirmed that the South African was still their employee and were equally surprised to learn that he had left.
Tau has been struggling with injuries since his move to Al Ahly, who were then under the tutelage of compatriot Pitso Mosimane.
The former Bafana Bafana coach threw in the towel, citing immense pressure, adding that he was now going on a sabbatical. Mosimane’s departure created speculation regarding Tau’s future at the club.
Tau has not featured in the last four consecutive games for Al Ahly as he is injured.
The Bafana Bafana striker has not scored, let alone provided an assist for Al Ahly since last year, November 2021.
Last month, international media reports also suggested that Al Ahly had placed Tau on the transfer list alongside other players, namely Luis Miquissone, Ali Lofti, Mostafa Shobier, Mahmoud Wahid, Mohamed Mahmoud and Mahmoud Metwaly.
However, management for Reds has remained quiet on such reports.
Al Ahly are enduring one of their worst seasons, as they lie in third place on the Egyptian Premier League log table, with rivals Zamalek sealing their 15th league title with three games to go to the end of the season.
