The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has snubbed the national protest planned for Wednesday, 24 August 2022,  saying its members will continue with their normal operations.

“Santaco is not part of that shutdown. We distance ourselves from it,” Santaco’s Bongani Magagula said.

“Despite numerous requests to participate in the National shutdown, SANTACO will not participate in the planned National shutdown.”

Thousands of workers affiliated with Saftu and Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), as well as other unions are expected to  down tools and strike against what they believe is an impending economic collapse.

Saftu says they are expecting all workers to participate in the stay-away, except essential workers, as the strike is protected under Section 77 of the Labour Relations Act. Marches are expected to take place across the country at various government institutions and state-owned enterprises.

Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, Western Cape are among the provinces where protests are expected to take place. The strike will address the increase of costs of living, food, electricity, petrol and transport costs. SAFTU advised the working class to stay home tomorrow except those in essential services.
