Pitso Questions Zungu Return To Sundowns

Pitso Mosimane says he can’t talk on behalf of Bongani Zungu but feels a return to Mamelodi Sundowns was not the right move for his career.

Zungu has often credited Mosimane and coach Rulani Mokwena as pivotal figures in his rise to make the step up to Europe when he signed for Vitória de Guimarães back in 2017 after he had won the league, Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout over his three-year spell at the Tswhane giants.

After one season in the Portuguese top-flight he earned a move to Ligue 1 with Amiens, where he spent three seasons before they suffered relegation when the league was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Then-Glasgow Rangers head coach then Steven Gerrard came calling in October 20202, where he secured a loan move to the Scottish Premier League giants.

And while things didn’t quite work out, he walked away with a league-winners medal and returned to the French club in the second division, where him seeking an exit created a tumultuous ending to his stay.

Speculation was rife over where he would end up next with Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs both linked with the 29-year-old who was a free agent upon the expiry of his contract.

He said to have fielded ‘more lucrative’ offers elsewhere, but Mokwena stated that his relationship with Sundowns’ coaches could have played a role in his blockbuster return to Chloorkop – which was epitomised by his unveiling in front of a sold-out Loftus Versveld two weeks ago before thrashing Amakhosi 4-0.

Mosimane says he’s not at liberty to completely formulate an opinion without knowing the ins and outs of his decision, but suggested it may not have been the right move at this stage of his career.

“I can’t comment much, because I don’t know… it’s easy to criticise when you don’t know or have the real facts. I was watching Dynamo Kyiv vs Glasgow Rangers the other day, I mean woah, what an environment – and I said to myself, Bongani was here guys, you know what I’m trying to say,” Mosimane said.

“I don’t know if… I mean I can’t talk on his behalf, I’m not his agent or I can’t talk on his behalf, he must talk for himself. But I don’t know if it’s the right move hey – and you can say the same thing about Percy Tau when he came to Al Ahly from Brighton.

“But Percy was not playing at Brighton, Percy didn’t have other issues, he could just not make the team – let’s be honest, the coach felt he can’t make the team. Remember every could say why did he go to Al Ahly?
