Hunt Singles Out Sundowns’ Title Rivals

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt believes Orlando Pirates will be the closest team to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns this season.

The four-time league title winner sees Pirates as one of the teams that will give Sundowns a run for their money, looking at the players they have signed this season.

Hunt was talking after his side held the Buccaneers to a goalless draw on Sunday, which ws only Matsatsantsa’s second point of the new campaign.

“The last three games, if anybody watched them, I think we should have won all the games. Tonight we could say they had the ball here and they dominate the ball. I mean they’ve signed well they got a hell of the squad,” he told reporters.

“They are the closest team to challenge Sundowns, there’s no doubt about it. I don’t think is there anybody else. I think this is a team that will challenge them.”

Hunt also insisted that clubs should be judged based on their spending, with SuperSport only bringing in a few new faces ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

“I think that’s how you should be judged, what you spend and what your return is. I think that’s how football should be judged and it doesn’t get judged like that enough,” he added.

“So if you spend, you should be achieving more. Some teams have bought players and some haven’t. You get a little bit thin when you lose players like we lost [Onismor] Bhasera.

“I played the kid there and he was unbelievable, now he’s out, now somebody else must play on Wednesday again. It’s a problem for us. But we’ll soldier on.”
