Hunt Speaks Amid Mabiliso & Jooste Speculation

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has admitted they need to dip into the market with former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs full-backs linked to the club.

Hunt has endured a tough start to life in his second stint at SuperSport – a club he won three consecutive league titles with between 2008 and 2010 – with no wins in their opening four games of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign.

And after the 0-0 draw against Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, he conceded it might be time to beef up the squad with the games coming in thick and fast.

The four-time league winner has made no secret of his need for a new left-back, with captain Onismor Bhasera, aged 36, their first-choice at the moment and ruled out through injury, former Chiefs defender Sibusiso Mabiliso has been earmarked as potential recruitment.

“We’re short, we are short [with players],” he said when asked by iDiski Times in the post-match press conference whether they will go into the market.

“To get a player in now, it’s going to be very difficult but we need it, we need another body or two to help us, especially when you’re playing like this – three games, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, then there is a break next week.

“I don’t believe in a big squad but you also need players, you need a little bit of versatility, we’ve got a few versatile players but that also takes time on the training ground.

“I told Thabo September, who was sitting next to me, we played Pirates three times a week once and he played right-back, centre-back and centre-midfield. We won all three games and he was Man of the Match three times, it’s different now, isn’t it.”

Wayde Jooste has also been training with the club since his exit and was in attendance at the stadium watching the goalless draw against his former side and when probed by this website that he perhaps ticks the boxes, Hunt continued to remain coy: “We are looking and we will look.”

However, suggestions are that his signing is imminent as they have been impressed by his work rate and levels of fitness since joining for his assessment period after seeing his contract terminated at the Buccaneers last month.
