Yet, while her lyrics found their way into the hearts of listeners, the woman behind them remained largely unseen. Today, that story changes.

Makhanj unveils a deeply personal body of work
Makhanj has officially unveiled her highly anticipated debut album, Transkei—a deeply personal body of work that marks not only the beginning of her journey as a recording artist, but the culmination of years spent discovering her own voice.
More than an album, Transkei is an exploration of identity, belonging and the places that shape us. Rooted in memory and inspired by the richness of South African culture, the project invites listeners into a world where music becomes both storytelling and homecoming.
“Transkei is my way of introducing myself to the world—not only as an artist, but as a storyteller,” says Makhanj. “For years I’ve expressed myself through music written for others. This album is different because it’s deeply personal. Every song carries a piece of my journey, my culture and the people who have shaped who I am. I hope listeners find pieces of themselves in these stories too.”
The album’s title is intentionally symbolic. Rather than referencing geography alone, Transkei represents home in its broadest sense—our roots, our memories, our language and the experiences that continue to define us. Throughout the project, Makhanj reflects on these themes with honesty and vulnerability, creating music that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Intentional female creative collaboration
Beyond the music itself, Transkei is a celebration of female creative collaboration. The album’s visual identity was shaped by an all-women creative team, bringing together some of South Africa’s most exciting artistic voices.
Acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Tony Gum led the creative direction, crafting a visual language that mirrors the album’s themes of heritage, identity and belonging. Photographer Nondumiso Shange translated this vision into a striking collection of imagery that captures both the intimacy and strength at the heart of the project. Together with Makhanj’s artistic vision, the collaboration demonstrates the power of women creating work that is intentional, authentic and culturally resonant.
“From the very beginning, I wanted Transkei to feel honest,” Makhanj explains. “Working with women who understood that vision allowed us to create something that feels true to who I am. Every image, every visual and every creative decision became part of telling the story of this album.”
At a time when audiences are increasingly seeking authenticity from the artists they support, Transkei arrives as both a musical offering and a cultural statement. Rather than chasing trends, the album embraces storytelling, celebrating African identity while honouring the experiences that connect us all regardless of where we come from.
With Transkei, Makhanj is not simply releasing her debut album. She is stepping into a space she has spent years helping create—this time with her own voice leading the conversation.
