Barker – But I’ll Take The Point

After their 1-1 draw against Cape Town City on Saturday, Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker said had it been a boxing match, maybe City would have won on a split decision.

Barker said his team probably created the best chances in the first half at DHL Stadium, so he was disappointed to go into the break behind.

However he admitted that perhaps over the 90 minutes, and despite getting the equaliser in the second half, his team weren’t at their best, but he will take the point and move on.

“I thought first half, both teams showed quite a deal of good quality in terms of keeping the ball, moving the ball and creating some chances,” Barker said at the post match press conference.

“I felt that we created the better chances and earlier chances with the post, and then the cutback from Mendieta. And then obviously City created their sort of opportunity. And then got the goal just before halftime.

“So I thought we probably didn’t deserve to go in halftime one nil down. It was a well-worked goal by them, good cross, Gonzalez good header. But I felt a little bit, it was maybe a bit not the fairest sort of result to go into halftime, but it is what it is.

“We had to come out second half and not panic and not sort of just lose our heads and trying to get the equalizer and get punished with maybe a second goal, which probably would’ve put the game beyond us. In all fairness,

“Second half, it didn’t look like we were too threatening. It didn’t look like we were going to actually get the equalizer until Mendieta again, with a really good header. And so I felt overall in the game, we weren’t at our best today. I’m not too sure whether the pitch played a bit of a role. It was a little bit sort of slippery and a bit soft underground.

“So probably a point that we will take. It’s never easy playing away to a team of the calibre of Cape Town City. So at the end of the day, a well-earned point.

“Had the game been a boxing match, probably overall, they may have just won it on a split decision. But I’ll take the point.”

Barker also explained that he’s proud of his side to have started with unbeaten despite a tough run of fixtures.

“And ja, we’ve had a tough run of fixtures, obviously, away to Gallants, Pirates, Royal AM, City away, Sundowns midweek away and then Chiefs, so to be unbeaten after four matches, I think is not a bad return for the type of start that we had,” he aded.

“And obviously a lot of new players coming into the squad, that are still finding their feet a bit. Obviously even two debuts today for our foreign players whose work permits came through in the week.

“So overall I thought we’ll take a point, we weren’t dominated and I don’t think we dominated.”
