Royal AM co-coach Khabo Zondo has painted a joyless picture of Samir Nurkovic’s recovery from injury, citing that ‘there was nothing positive about his situation.
The 30-year-old Serbian striker joined the KZN outfit in June after spending three years at Kaizer Chiefs.
He was one of their biggest signings as they plotted a repeat of what they did last season. Royal AM finished third in their first season, booking a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup.
After their second loss of the season to Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, Zondo revealed they had to wait a little longer.
“Regarding Nurkovic, we [are] still waiting on him, but for now, there’s nothing positive about his situation,” Zondo told the media.
During the midweek clash, which ended 1-0 in favour of Pirates, Thwihli Thwahla handed 28-year-old goalkeeper Xolani Ngcobo his full debut.
The former Uthongathi goalie had an impressive game and showed signs of a top goalkeeper.
Zondo hailed the shot-stopper, who also had a stint with Thanda Royal Zulu, saying players like him in that position are needed to boost the team’s confidence.
“Xolani Mapholoba is a modern goalkeeper. Maybe you will doubt his height, but he is a very intelligent goalkeeper.
“He makes some saves and can play very well. We need someone like that, who brings confidence to the team and can give the team many options.”
Royal AM will now set their sights on Marumo Gallants as they look to bounce back after two successive losses. They will be motivated by the fact that the Limpopo outfit is yet to record a victory this season.
They have played draws in all their opening matches of the season, while the hosts have played four because of their campaign in the CAF Confederations Cup.
Interestingly, Royal AM co-coach Dan Malesela knows Gallants from his stint with them last season and will certainly put that knowledge to good use.
