A 20-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to the death of a three-month-old baby in Mundzedzi village, Limpopo, police confirmed on Saturday.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, 1 August 2025, at around 18:00. According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, officers from the South African Police Service in Bandelierkop were alerted after two individuals brought the deceased infant to the Vleifontein Clinic.

“Police were on patrol duties when they were summoned to the clinic at about 18:30. Upon arrival, a medical officer pointed them to a bed where the lifeless body of the child lay,” said Ledwaba.

The two individuals reportedly told police they had been sitting outside a house with the suspect, who was holding the baby. The suspect then went inside with the child. A few minutes later, the witnesses followed her and allegedly found her seated and choking the baby.

“They intervened and rushed the infant to the clinic, but unfortunately, the child succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead by medical personnel,” Ledwaba said.

Police opened a case of murder and quickly tracked down and arrested the suspect, who is a relative of the child. She is expected to appear in the Makhado Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder.

The motive for the killing remains unclear, and police investigations are ongoing.
