The newly established Office of the IDAC Oversight Judge has confirmed that it received formal complaints involving Advocate Andrea Johnson, who heads South Africa’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption.

However, the office stressed that the Andrea Johnson complaints remain under assessment. It has not made any finding against her or released details about the substance of the complaints.

Oversight office assesses Andrea Johnson complaints

The oversight office confirmed the complaints in a statement issued on Tuesday, 21 July 2026.

Spokesperson Tiyisela Mpuzana said the office normally avoids commenting on complaints or matters under consideration. However, it made an exception because of the strong public interest, numerous media enquiries and previous public reporting about the complaints.

Mpuzana said officials were handling the matter through established processes and in line with the office’s legal mandate. TimesLIVE, Eyewitness News and The Citizen also reported the confirmation.

“The receipt of a complaint does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing,” Mpuzana said.

The office has not disclosed how many complaints it received, who submitted them or what specific conduct they concern. It also said it would not discuss possible investigative steps while the matter remains under consideration.

New office provides independent IDAC oversight

Retired Justice Takalani Joseph Raulinga heads the oversight office, which recently began operating.

The office was created under amendments to the National Prosecuting Authority Act to provide independent judicial oversight of IDAC. Its mandate includes considering complaints about alleged misconduct involving officials within the directorate.

Raulinga has said the office will deal with complaints without fear, favour or prejudice. It must also protect complainants and whistleblowers who make disclosures in good faith.

Procedural fairness remains central

The office said decisions about confidentiality depend on the circumstances of each case. These include the public interest, legality, procedural fairness and the rights of the people involved.

Therefore, confirmation of the Andrea Johnson complaints should not be treated as proof of misconduct.

The oversight office said it would assess every complaint independently and objectively. It will provide no further details while its processes continue, to protect the integrity of the matter and the rights of all affected parties.
