Court Case of 69 Accused in Violent Jeffreys Bay Anti-Immigrant Unrest Postponed
The court appearance of 69 individuals arrested following violent unrest during an anti-undocumented migrant march in Jeffreys Bay has been postponed to October 23.
The accused briefly appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, facing charges of trespassing and public violence. They were allegedly involved in the looting of at least 23 spaza shops in the Ocean View area after a protest march turned chaotic last Thursday.
The march, saw over 1,000 residents from Ocean View and Pellsrus take to the streets to voice concerns over undocumented migrants. What began as a demonstration escalated into violence, with reports of shots fired, shops looted, and at least one person injured. Several foreign nationals were moved to temporary shelter for safety.
Police maintained a strong presence in the area in the aftermath, recovering stolen goods and urging calm. Sixty of the accused were released on warning, while others remain in custody.
