A 6-year-old Cape Town boy has been kidnapped in Kensington.

Two suspicious vehicles were spotted near but not at the boy’s school on Wednesday morning.

Police have told the publication that six suspects fled the area and that no one’s been arrested as yet.

The motive is also unknown.

Kensington community policing forum chairperson, Cheslyn Steenberg: “The Kensington CPF can confirm that the child was kidnapped on his way to school so it did not happen at the school, which is Hidayatul Islam Primary School.

“I can confirm I’ve just had an engagement with the investigating officer that SAPS have information of a second vehicle involved – a silver Polo and a white Polo.”

The owner of one getaway vehicle used in the kidnapping has been identified while Steenberg said the motive for the kidnapping is still under investigation.

“The two vehicles are being sought. The one has been identified; the owner has been identified. The other one we are still trying to verify. No ransom call has been received or anything like that,” he said.

CONCERN OVER RISING CRIME IN KENSINGTON

Residents in Kensington say there’s a growing concern about rising crime in the community.

Speaking to the publication, a source who lives close to the family home has alleged that the kidnappers were watching them for a couple of days.

“It’s very bad because this boy is six-years-old… they parked here for three days. So, they timed them. During the three days, they would park here for three hours and go. So, they were watching him,” she said.

She recalled the brazen nature of the attack: “The child was standing with his dad on the stoep waiting for the other children to come out and they just pulled a gun out and took the child.”

The abduction has alarmed the community and another resident said she was anxious as it’s the second kidnapping in the area in the space of a month.

“I just feel devastated because it is happening more and more now. After the adult [men] were kidnapped now it is the child, it’s getting closer to us. It’s devastating really,” said one community member.

There are claims the child kidnappers have been spotted in the area for days.

Police said no arrests have been made yet.
