Marques Secures New Move After City Exit

Barely 48 hours after leaving Cape Town City, Angolan club Petro de Luanda have announced the signing of goalkeeper Hugo Marques.

Marques’ exit came as a surprise after the 2021/2022 PSL Goalkeeper of the Season had renewed his contract at the end of last season, but after three games in the DStv Premiership this season, the 36-year-old parted ways with City, with personal reasons being cited.

Now even more surprisingly, Petro have announced the Angolan international, and he could even face City in the CAF Champions League, if the South African debutants progress through the first preliminary round.

“Goalkeeper Hugo Marques is the latest face of Petro de Luanda to reinforce Alexandre Santos’ options,” the club’s official social media account posted.

“The Angolan international signs for Petro de Luanda a contract valid for one season and another optional.

“Hugo Marques has represented Cape Town City for the last season and a half and goesalless on a 17-game goalless run. Serving Cape Town City, Hugo Marques has played 34 games, having been voted the best goalkeeper in the Premier Soccer League of the 2021-2022.

“Welcome, Hugo marques”

Marques had earlier bid farewell to City on his Instagram account saying, “One year of Cape Town City FC! I’m grateful for meet amazing people at Cape Town, in the club and in the city as well! Proud to be in the history club and proud of my commitment with everyone!
I leave, but my name and my person stay in your minds! Thank you office staff, Chairman, Technical staff, medical staff , players and fans! All the best for those who share the same feeling about the football like I do.”
