ANC Links Mandela Day Message to Municipal Elections

The African National Congress has used its ANC Mandela Day message to encourage South Africans to register for the 2026 municipal elections and vote for the party.

Acting ANC spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli said the party believed political participation, improved service delivery and action against inequality could help honour former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

ANC calls for registration and service

According to Netwerk24, Mhlauli urged South Africans to take an active role in improving the lives of others through service and selfless dedication.

She said the “greatest tribute” to Mandela would involve strengthening communities, fighting poverty and inequality, reforming local government and improving basic services.

The ANC also encouraged voters to register for the elections and support the party. Its official website carries an ongoing registration campaign aimed at South Africans aged 18 and older.

The party has placed local government reform at the centre of its 2026 election campaign. Its candidate-selection programme says it wants to field capable representatives ahead of the polls.

Political leaders mark Mandela Day

Meanwhile, DA federal leader Geordin Hill-Lewis marked Mandela Day in Ennerdale, Johannesburg, where he joined community-service activities.

In a DA statement, Hill-Lewis said building a better country required citizens to serve others, strengthen communities and demand reliable municipal services. He also called for safer streets, cleaner public spaces and responsive local government.

Parliament calls for action beyond 67 minutes

Parliament’s presiding officers also urged South Africans to go beyond the traditional 67 minutes of Mandela Day service.

They said the country had made progress since democracy, but poverty, unemployment and inequality remained major challenges.

Parliament added that lasting change depended on public participation and the collective efforts of South Africans, alongside its own work in legislation and oversight.

The ANC Mandela Day message, the DA’s community campaign and Parliament’s statement all placed service and local accountability at the centre of this year’s commemorations.

Mandela Day takes place annually on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday, and promotes sustained community action in recognition of his legacy.
