Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has paid an emotional tribute to Jayden Adams, saying he is struggling to come to terms with the sudden death of the talented midfielder just days after South Africa’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign.
The 25-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns star died over the weekend after returning from FIFA World Cup 2026, where he played a key role in helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages for the first time.

Broos said he was left heartbroken by the news.
“My deepest condolences to the family of Jayden. It is with great disbelief that I heard the news,” Broos said.
“There are no words to express my sadness. As a father I send the family my support in those difficult moments.”
The Belgian coach described Adams’ passing as a huge loss for South African football.
“Bafana Bafana has lost a great talent too soon and too young. May his soul rest in peace.”
SAFA visits grieving family
Broos’ tribute came as a South African Football Association (SAFA) delegation, led by president Dr Danny Jordaan, visited the Adams family home in Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, on Monday to offer its condolences.
Jordaan said Adams had made enormous strides in recent years and had earned his place on football’s biggest stage.
“This is still so difficult to process, such a sad loss. Our sincere condolences to the family of Jayden Adams.”
He also reflected on the personal tragedy Adams endured during the World Cup after learning of the death of his grandmother.
“While in the United States we were informed about the loss of his grandmother. We were shocked and saddened when informed about the passing of Jayden this weekend.”
Jordaan described the midfielder’s death as “a huge loss to our country’s football.”
‘I have no words’
Bafana Bafana team manager Vincent Tseka, who formed part of the SAFA delegation, admitted the tragedy had left him speechless.
“I am still in shock and do not know how to digest this tragedy. Honestly, I have no words.”
Family spokesperson Brendine Johnson said details regarding Adams’ memorial service and funeral will be announced once arrangements have been finalised.
The football world continues to mourn the loss of one of South Africa’s brightest young talents, with tributes pouring in from clubs, team-mates, supporters and football organisations across the globe.
