Orlando Pirates begin Betway Premiership title defence against promoted Milford FC

Defending Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates will begin their quest to retain the league title when they host newly promoted Milford FC at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, August 1, in the opening fixture of the 2026/27 season. The match is scheduled to kick off at 3.30pm

The Buccaneers will be determined to make a winning start after ending a decade-long wait for the league championship last season. Pirates dethroned perennial champions Mamelodi Sundowns by finishing with 69 points, finishing one point ahead of Sundowns, who ended on 68 points.

The Soweto giants will also be looking to build on the momentum gained from last season, when they combined defensive discipline with an exciting attacking style to reclaim domestic supremacy. Playing in front of their passionate supporters at Orlando Stadium should provide an added advantage as they seek to lay down an early marker in the title race.

Milford FC who are still fresh from the Motsepe FoundationChampionship (MFC) where they were plying their trades, meanwhile, will be making a dream return to the country’s top flight after securing promotion through the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs. The KwaZulu-Natal outfit earned their place among South Africa’s elite after overcoming Cape Town City in the playoffs, while Magesi FC dropped into the MFC.

Although they enter the match as underdogs, Milford will be eager to prove they belong in the Betway Premiership and will be hoping to cause one of the biggest upsets of the opening weekend.

The Sea Robbers head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is expected to field a strong starting eleven packed with experienced internationals and exciting young talent as the club aims to defend the championship they fought so hard to win.

The home side’s biggest threats are expected to come from creative midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi, whose vision and ability to unlock stubborn defences make him one of the league’s most influential players. Winger Relebohile Mofokeng who had a good performance in the senior national team, Bafana Bafana during their recent participation in the FIFA World Cup, will again be expected to terrorise defenders with his pace, dribbling ability and eye for goal, while striker Tshegofatso Mabasa will lead the attack after another productive campaign in front of goal.

Milford, on the other hand, will rely heavily on the core of players who guided them through a successful promotion campaign. Their experienced defenders will be tasked with containing Pirates’ dangerous attack, while their midfield and forwards will look to capitalise on counter-attacking opportunities and set-pieces against the defending champions.

Last season, Orlando Pirates were the standout performers in the Betway Premiership, consistently collecting points against the league’s strongest sides before eventually ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ long dominance of South African football.

Milford enjoyed an equally memorable season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. After narrowly missing automatic promotion, they kept their composure in the promotion playoffs to finally earn a historic place in the Premiership.

While Pirates will enter the encounter as overwhelming favourites, opening matches often produce surprises, and Milford will be motivated to begin life in the top flight with a positive result.
Victory for Pirates would provide the perfect start to their title defence, while a positive result for Milford would immediately announce their arrival among South Africa’s football elite and boost their confidence for the challenging season ahead.
