George Matlou finds new club after Kaizer Chiefs exit

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has officially joined Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 28-year-old parted ways with Amakhosi at the end of June after his contract expired, with the club deciding not to extend his stay. It was reported last week that Matlou had travelled to the Western Cape to undergo assessment under the watchful eye of Stellenbosch head coach Gavin Hunt.

Stellenbosch have now confirmed the signing of the experienced midfielder on a long-term contract. In a short message posted on social media, the club wrote: “Welcome to Stellenbosch, George.”

Matlou leaves Chiefs after spending four seasons at Naturena, where he helped the club win the Nedbank Cup, ending their 10-year trophy drought. However, his final season was disrupted by injury, limiting his game time and ultimately contributing to his departure.

During his time with Amakhosi, Matlou made 46 appearances across all competitions. Before joining Chiefs, he played for Swallows FC, where he had a wonderful time and caught the eyes of Amakhosi scouts.
