Cape Town police have opened an inquest into the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams.
The 25-year-old footballer was found dead at a property in Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town, on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said an investigation is under way following the discovery of Adams’ body.
Adams’ death was confirmed by his representatives and guardian.
His death comes just weeks after he returned to South Africa from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Before Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinal between Norway and England, players and supporters observed a moment of silence in honour of Adams.
The midfielder made three appearances during the tournament.
He played a role in South Africa’s historic progression beyond the group stage.
His death has shocked the South African football community, with tributes continuing to pour in.
Adams had become one of the standout names in local football after rising through the ranks and earning a place in the national team.
Partner pays tribute
Adams’ partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram.
“Rest in peace, my love. Thank you for every memory, every laugh, every hug and every moment we shared,” she wrote.
She described Adams as the love of her life, her greatest supporter and her best friend.
“A part of my heart left with you, and I will carry your love with me forever,” she added.
Adendorf said she would miss him every day.
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie described Adams as one of South African football’s brightest talents.
Adams began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC.
He became the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020.
He went on to make 139 appearances for Stellenbosch and helped the club win the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.
Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
During his time in Pretoria, he added a Betway Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his list of achievements.
Police are now investigating the circumstances around his death.
