South Africa, and football fans across the world, are mourning the death of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams who passed away at just 25 years old on Saturday, 11 July.
Adams played as a midfielder for both Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns.
He died just after returning from FIFA World Cup 2026.

Details surrounding his death has not yet been made public, although there has been some speculation that this could have been suicide.
Speaking on behalf of the Adams family, mentor Brendine Johnson described the devastating impact of the midfielder’s passing.
“At this moment, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now; they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone,” Johnson said.
“This passing has ripped everybody apart. Returning from the World Cup just now, and then getting such news… I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive about returning after the World Cup and going forward.”

Adams was the first player from Stellenbosch FC’s academy to sign a professional contract. His rise from local youth football to the senior squad inspired many young athletes in South Africa.
The soccer star played a pivotal role in Stellenbosch’s 2023 Carling Knockout Cup victory, showcasing his skill, composure, and leadership on the pitch.
In 2025, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns, where he quickly became a key midfielder. His contributions helped the team secure both the CAF Champions League and the Betway Premiership titles.
Adams represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting against Mexico and Czechia, and coming off the bench in the win over South Korea.
His resilience was remarkable, especially as he continued playing despite personal loss of his grandmother during the tournament.
Adams left behind a five-year-old daughter and partner Aqueelah Adendorf.
