Ex-Chiefs forward relishing CAF dance with Botswana’s GU

Former Kaizer Chiefs academy product Sizwe Twala is relishing his imminent CAF Champions league dance with Botswana champions Gaborone United [GU].

Twala switched to Botswana after stints with the Orlando Pirates academy and loan spells at Pretoria Callies and Swallows.

The 25-year-old went north into the Botswana Premier League in January, with GU contracting him on a two-year deal. He, however, made only nine appearances across all official games without finding the back of the net.

His only goal in GU colours was in a mid-season Charity Cup while he won the league and cup double with the Reds.

Speaking to FARPost, the forward tipped his team to advance in the CAF Champions League as they return to continental football after a decade.

The Gaborone-based side will face Congo’s AS Vita in the preliminary round of the Champions League games.

“It is suitable for me to play in the Champions League and the guys. Every player wants to play there. We do not want to get there and add numbers. We want to compete and go through the group stages, the knockout and the final.

“We should have that dream as a team. We should be allowed to dream,” he said.

Twala has admitted he is yet to make a statement in the Botswana Premier League owing to the injuries he sustained in the first six months of his stay in Botswana.

“I would say that my stay has thus far been food. Since we won the league and the FA Cup, though, we lost out on the Charity Cup, and the guys and I are starting to understand each other better. But the most important thing is that we won the league, the team had not won the league in years, and we managed to do that. I can say that so far, my stay has been good.

“My objective is to win the league and every cup we play for and do well in Africa. I want to score more goals and help the team score goals. Last season I had two injuries, and they disturbed me. So I will be looking to stay fit and avoid injuries,” Twala said.

GU will be in CAF Champions League action on the weekend of September 9-11, while the second round is a weekend later. The Botswana Premier League is scheduled to start in mid-September.
