Kaizer Chiefs starting XI in Da Cruz’s 4-3-3 system

Kaizer Chiefs could line up in a new-look 4-3-3 formation under new head coach Fernando Da Cruz next season. The Frenchman is expected to stamp his authority on the squad as he prepares for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.

Additionally, former Amakhosi co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef recently revealed that Da Cruz exclusively worked with the 4-3-3 during his time with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. The system focuses on quick ball movement, attacking width and a hard-working midfield.

Sources close to the club believe Da Cruz wants to implement the formation at Naturena. The coach reportedly believes the system suits the technical quality of South African players.

Furthermore, the tactical switch could also reshape several positions within the squad. Some players may be asked to take on unfamiliar roles to fit the new system.

MDUDUZI SHABALALA NEW ROLE FOR KAIZER CHIEFS?

Expected Shabalala to drop into a deeper central role rather than operating as a traditional number 10.

Instead of playing behind the striker, Shabalala could feature as an advanced number eight. The role would allow him to carry the ball through midfield, support attacks and help link defence with the front three.

The heart of defence sees new arrival Thabo Moloisane alongside Rushwin Dortley who returns from a long-term injury to replace the deaparted Aden McCarthy.

Up front will be the Nigerian international striker Etiosa Ighodaro from a long injury layoff. Expect Ighodaro to be the first choice ahead of Flavio Da Silva, thanks to Ighodaro’s better quality with the ball at his feet.

PREDICTED STARTING XI

If Da Cruz sticks with his preferred 4-3-3 formation, Kaizer Chiefs could line up as follows:

  • Goalkeeper: Brandon Petersen
  • Right-back: Dillan Solomons
  • Right centre-back: Thabo Moloisane
  • Left centre-back: Rushwin Dortley
  • Left-back: Brandley Cross
  • Defensive midfielder: Lebohang Maboe
  • Central midfielder: Siphesihle Ndlovu
  • Central midfielder: Mduduzi Shabalala
  • Left winger: Asanele Velebayi
  • Right winger: Glody Lilepo
  • Striker: Etiosa Ighodaro.
