Exclusive: Trevor Gumbi unmasked on ‘Masked Singer SA’ S3

South African actor and comedian Trevor Gumbi was the first celebrity to be unmasked on The Masked Singer season three, which aired on SABC 2 on Saturday 4 July.

TREVOR GUMBI IS FIRST CELEBRITY TO BE UNMASKED ON ‘THE MASKED SINGER SA’

Actor and comedian Trevor Gumbi was disguised as an icon of the Johannesburg skyline, Ponte Tower and he set the Masked Singer South Africa season three stage alight with a song-and-dance performance that completely stumped the panel of detectives.

J’Something, Sithelo Shozi, Somizi Mhlongo and Skhumba repreised their roles as detectives this season with Mpho Pops returning as the host. While three of the detectuves had no clue that Trevor was the concrete high-riser, media personality Somizi took a wild guess that it might be Trevor.

This past week, Leopard tried to roar away Chopsticks but was banished to the Danger Zone. Then, Ponte Tower tried to rise above our beautiful national flower, the Protea.  Ponte Tower chose an appropriately urban hit for the face-off performance against Protea – TKZee’s “Dlala Mapantsula”.

Unfortunately, after the votes were counted, Ponte Tower had to keep its lights on a little longer in the Danger Zone alongside Leopard. Not for long, though, as the final verdict was a permanent power cut-off for the skyscraper. Ponte Tower had to be unmasked.

EXCLUSIVE: Q&A WITH TREVOR GUMBI

How did it feel to be the first mask revealed on Masked Singer SA?

Being the first mask revealed feels amazing cause we managed to set the tone for the entire season.

What do you think viewers can expect this season?

This season will be more surprising than any other season with new amazing audience participation.

What were some of the highlights of your Masked Singer SA journey?

My highlight was watching the detectives confused, well, except for Somizi, he seems to have known from the get-go.

Which masks are you rooting for to win this season?

Although I lost to him, I really do hope that Leopard wins it all.

The Masked Singer South Africa season three premiere episodes air on SABC 2 on Saturdays at 19:00, with rebroadcasts on SABC one on Thursdays at 21:00 and on SABC two on Fridays at 13:30. The episode is also available for streaming on Netflix. Take a look at J’Something’s thoughts on season three here.
