Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of TS Galaxy in their first home game of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.
Sundowns came into the game as overwhelming favourites after beating them 3-0 home and away in their debut season, with Galaxy yet to score against the league champions in their history.
But history was clearly meant to be broken as they pulled off a tactical masterclass under Sead Ramovic with a disciplined defensive display and found the only goal of the game was a devastating counter-attack.
Bathusi Aubaas eventual shot from range saw Ronwen Williams do well to save it, but it was parried to Lefa Hlongwane who then slotted the home with aplomb, much to the dismay of the home supporters at Lofts Versveld.
And despite the galaxy of stars Masandawana hold in their artillery, with the likes of Andile Jali, Gaston Sirino, Lyle Lakay, Sipho Mbule and Lesedi Kapinga and Ethiopia international, Abubekr Nasir on his debut, all coming from the bench – they failed to break down the stubborn Rockets defence marshalled by Pagiso Sanoka and Given Msimango.
The win moved Galaxy up into sixth place while Sundowns dropped to eight after all 16 sides completed two rounds of fixtures.
