The legacy of late South African rapper, entrepreneur and cultural icon Rikhado Makhado, popularly known as Riky Rick, is set to live on through a unique initiative that combines remembrance, healing and environmental restoration.

The Riky Rick Foundation for the Promotion of Artivism has partnered with the Naledi Village Communal Property Association and Rustlers Valley Regenerative Farm and Eco-Tourism to launch the Riky Rick/Anton Chaka Memorial Forest in the Eastern Free State. The two-day event will take place on 18 and 19 July, coinciding with Nelson Mandela Day celebrations and just days before what would have been the late rapper’s 39th birthday on 20 July.
A living tribute to a lasting legacy
Rather than commemorating Riky Rick with a traditional monument or statue, the memorial forest aims to create a living legacy by planting indigenous trees. The initiative will also honour the lives of Anton Chaka and the late Frik Grobbelaar, whose contributions to community development and environmental restoration have left a lasting impact.
According to the foundation, the memorial forest is intended to serve as a space for remembrance, healing, regeneration, and hope, while encouraging visitors to reconnect with nature and each other.

Memorial forest honours Riky Rick’s vision
Riky Rick was not only celebrated for his music and fashion influence, but also for his advocacy around mental health and his commitment to uplifting young creatives through initiatives such as Cotton Fest. Following his death in February 2022, conversations around mental health awareness gained renewed attention across South Africa.
Executive director of the Riky Rick Foundation and the rapper’s mother, Louisa Zondo, said the memorial forest reflects the values that defined the artist’s life and work.
“Riky believed deeply in people. His greatest gift was making others feel seen, heard, and worthy of their dreams. The Memorial Forest is an extension of that belief. Every tree planted becomes a symbol of hope, renewal, and a reminder that even after loss, life continues to grow.”
A weekend of healing and reflection
The launch event will bring together artists, mental health advocates, environmentalists, community leaders, and fans to participate in tree planting, storytelling sessions, healing circles, and community activities designed to promote emotional well-being and environmental stewardship.
Organisers hope the memorial forest will continue to grow over the coming years, hosting annual commemorations, educational programmes and environmental initiatives that reflect Riky Rick’s enduring message of creativity, compassion, and collective healing.
