Switzerland produced a disciplined and clinical display to defeat Algeria 2-0 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday morning, ending the Desert Warriors’ impressive campaign and dealing another painful blow to African football.
The victory sends Switzerland into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Colombia versus Ghana encounter, while Algeria become the fifth African nation to exit the tournament after South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal.
Switzerland seized control early in the contest and took the lead in the 10th minute when Breel Embolo finished from close range after an excellent run and low cross by the outstanding Johan Manzambi.
Algeria responded positively after the break by enjoying more possession, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-drilled Swiss defence marshalled by Manuel Akanji and captain Granit Xhaka.
The Swiss sealed victory in the first minute of the second half (46th minute through Dan Ndoye, whose composed finish ensured there would be no Algerian comeback and secured Switzerland’s first World Cup knockout victory since 1938.
Switzerland set up in a compact 3-4-2-1 system that allowed them to dominate the midfield through Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler while using the pace of Johan Manzambi and Dan Ndoye to attack Algeria’s defensive flanks.
Coach Murat Yakin instructed his players to press aggressively whenever Algeria attempted to build from the back. That pressure forced several turnovers and prevented Riyad Mahrez and Ibrahim Maza from finding space between the lines.
Algeria enjoyed spells of possession, particularly in the second half, but Vladimir Petkovic’s side lacked penetration in the final third. Their wide players were repeatedly forced into harmless crosses, while Switzerland’s central defenders comfortably dealt with aerial threats. The decision to substitute Mahrez and Nabil Bentaleb further reduced Algeria’s attacking creativity as Switzerland comfortably saw out the match.
For Switzerland, the victory keeps alive hopes of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in more than seven decades.
For Algeria, it marks a disappointing end to a campaign that showed promise after they advanced from a difficult group. Despite their resilience throughout the tournament, defensive lapses and a lack of cutting edge in attack ultimately proved costly.
The result also leaves African football with even fewer representatives in the competition, increasing the pressure on the continent’s remaining teams to keep Africa’s World Cup dream alive.
