Belgium Senegal 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 comeback

Senegal’s dream of reaching the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in heartbreaking fashion after they surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium in a dramatic Round of 32 encounter at Lumen Field in Seattle on Wednesday night.

The Lions of Teranga looked to be cruising towards a famous victory after producing one of their best performances of the tournament. However, a late collapse allowed the experienced Red Devils to fight back before sealing victory in extra time.

Senegal started the brighter of the two sides and deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute when Habib Diarra finished off a well-worked move to put the African side 1-0 ahead.

The West Africans continued to trouble Belgium with their pace and aggressive pressing, and they doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half. Ismaïla Sarr calmly slotted home in the 51st minute after Belgium failed to deal with a dangerous attack, leaving the European side staring at a shock exit.

Belgium appeared out of ideas for much of the contest, but coach Rudi Garcia’s substitutions changed the momentum of the match.

Veteran striker Romelu Lukaku gave Belgium renewed hope when he pulled one back in the 86th minute, before midfielder Youri Tielemans completed the comeback with an equaliser three minutes later in the 89th minute to force extra time.

With Senegal visibly tiring and struggling to regain their earlier rhythm, Belgium dominated large periods of extra time and eventually found the winning goal to complete an extraordinary 3-2 comeback and book their place in the Round of 16.

For Senegal, the defeat will be difficult to accept. They had controlled the match for more than 80 minutes, defended with discipline and created the better chances, but a lapse in concentration during the closing stages proved fatal.

The result is another painful setback for African football at the tournament, with Senegal joining other eliminated African nations after coming within touching distance of a place in the last 16.

Belgium, meanwhile, once again demonstrated the value of experience and composure under pressure. Rather than panic when trailing 2-0, the Red Devils remained patient, made effective tactical adjustments, and punished Senegal’s late defensive errors.

The victory sends Belgium into the Round of 16, where they will continue their quest for a first FIFA World Cup title, while Senegal head home wondering how a match that seemed firmly in their grasp slipped away.
