Three Bafana stars who boosted their transfer value at the World Cup

Bafana Bafana may have exited the FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32, but several players left the tournament with their reputations significantly enhanced.

South Africa finished second in Group A to reach the knockout stages for the first time in the nation’s history before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada on Sunday evening.

Hugo Broos’ side impressed in victories over the Czech Republic and South Korea but struggled in a 2-0 loss to Mexico during the group stage. Against Canada, Bafana lacked creativity and attacking intensity, eventually conceding a heartbreaking late goal.

Despite the disappointment, a number of players stood out throughout the tournament.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi

Mbokazi was arguably Bafana’s standout performer at the World Cup. The 20-year-old defender barely put a foot wrong, earning praise for his composed displays, excellent positioning and no-nonsense defending.

He marshalled the backline with maturity beyond his years, often stepping up as a leader when more experienced teammates struggled. His performances have only strengthened the belief that he has a bright future ahead, with Chicago Fire expected to be his next destination.

Thapelo Maseko

Maseko reminded everyone of his quality on the international stage. The Mamelodi Sundowns winger, who spent last season on loan in Europe, scored the decisive goal against South Korea to send Bafana into the knockout rounds.

The 22-year-old’s pace, direct running and eye for goal suggest he could soon secure a permanent move to Europe, potentially to a more competitive league.

Relebohile Mofokeng

Although Mofokeng finished the tournament without registering a goal or an assist, the Orlando Pirates star once again showed why he is regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents.

The 21-year-old played a crucial role in Bafana’s victory over South Korea, while his vision, intelligent movement and passing were key to South Africa’s impressive performances against both the Czech Republic and the Koreans.

His displays have further strengthened his case for a move abroad, with reports already linking him with German giants Bayer Leverkusen.

Bafana’s World Cup campaign was not a failure but their last game against Canada will raise a lot of questions.

Which players should move to Europe?
