Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams says his debut for Mamelodi Sundowns was ‘amazing’ and he feels part of the family now.

Williams, 30, completed a high-profile transfer from SuperSport United to Sundowns in a deal worth a reported R12-million after 18 years at Matsatsansa.

The South Africa national team number one keeper cited the desire to move as he seeks a new challenge as was aiming to win trophies towards the final stretch of his career.

While he started their opening game of the season in the 2-0 win over Cape Town City, co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi said the keeping selection is not set in stone yet but Williams was more than delighted when reflecting on the opportunity handed to him on Friday evening at the DHL Stadium.

Manqoba Explains Williams Decision

“It felt amazing you know, always key to get the first game out the way and on a positive note as well, and to start with a clean sheet that was the objective of the team,” Williams said.

“So I’m glad that I started with a clean sheet, this is for all the goalkeepers in the department, it was amazing. The crowd was amazing, the atmosphere and the team as a whole – what a top performance. And ya, now I can say I’m part of the family now.”

“We defended well, they didn’t cause too many problems so, the one time they did break our lines it was time for me to step up, so I’m glad I could play my part and I mean having to make one save against such a good team shows how good we were defensively, a good start to the season.

With TS Galaxy now on the horizon next week at Loftus Versveld, Williams admitted there’s no room to get ahead of themselves after beating last season’s league runners up but he’s excited to make his home debut on Wednesday.

“It’s now time for us to recover, do our corrections analyse this game. There are a lot of positives to take into the next game and the next game is going to be another tough one for us.

“It’s a home game and I can’t wait to play in front of Masandawana, I’m excited to do the dances as well but the main thing is to first get the clean sheet and three points.”
