Africa has once again demonstrated its growing football power and ability to compete with the world’s best after producing a record-breaking eight teams in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The continent sent a historic 10 representatives to the global showpiece jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, and the majority of them delivered impressive performances during the group stage.
For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, Africa had a double-digit number of participating nations, and eight of them progressed to the knockout phase, proving they were not merely in the tournament to make up the numbers.
Only Algeria and Tunisia failed to secure automatic qualification after the group stages. South Africa finished runners-up in Group A, while Morocco also ended second in Group C. Côte d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, Ghana, Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo all booked their places in the Round of 32, with Senegal progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
The DR Congo became Africa’s eighth qualifier after defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 in their final Group G match on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, Algeria’s hopes of joining the other African nations remain alive despite a dramatic 3-3 draw with Australia in their final Group J fixture. The result left the Desert Foxes third in the group on four points, meaning their fate is no longer in their own hands. They must now wait for the remaining group matches to determine whether they will qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Whatever Algeria’s fate, Africa has already enjoyed its most successful FIFA World Cup group stage in history, with eight teams advancing to the knockout rounds and further underlining the continent’s growing strength on the global stage.
