Cape Town’s New R650m GrandWest Mall is Officially Underway

Construction has started on the new R650 million GrandWest Mall in Goodwood, Cape Town, marking a major step for one of the city’s best-known entertainment precincts.

The project is being developed through a joint venture between Flanagan & Gerard Property Group and GrandWest, a subsidiary of Sun International.

The mall will form part of the wider GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World precinct, which already attracts visitors through its casino, restaurants, hotels, conference facilities and entertainment venues.

What Shoppers can Expect

The new development will be a 22 000m² single-level convenience mall.

It is expected to open in June 2027.

Major retailers already confirmed include Checkers FreshX, a Halaal SuperSpar, Dis-Chem and Clicks.

Fashion brands from Mr Price Group, Truworths Group and Pepkor are also expected to feature in the mall.

Developers say more than 70% of the mall’s gross lettable area has already been secured, with further space under offer.

Jobs and Local Impact

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and after opening.

Reports on the development say about 2 500 jobs could be created during the building phase, with around 2 000 permanent jobs expected once the mall is complete.

For Goodwood and surrounding areas, this could bring new retail work, supplier opportunities and more foot traffic into the precinct.

Retail Meets Entertainment

A key part of the plan is to connect shopping with the existing GrandWest entertainment offering.

The mall will link directly with GrandWest’s children’s entertainment area, including Magic Company and Ten Pin Bowling.

It will also sit close to restaurants such as Panarottis, Ocean Basket and RocoMamas.

GrandWest general manager Mervyn Naidoo said the new mall would strengthen the precinct’s family appeal and help create a day-to-night destination where retail, leisure, dining and lifestyle come together.

Sun International’s Nomzamo Radebe said adding community retail to the precinct supports the group’s long-term vision for GrandWest as an integrated destination.
