Bwalya makes decision on his future

Former Chipolopolo Zambia midfielder Joel Bwalya says he is staying at demoted Kafue Celtic for the 2022/2023 National Division 1 campaign.
Bwalya, the young brother of Kalusha Bwalya, guided the Celtic to debut FAZ Super League promotion at the end of the 2019/2020 Division 1 campaign.
Celtic made a notable start in the FAZ Super League, but they lost steam as the demands of top-flight football took their toll in the second half of the season, in which they lost 9 out of their final 17 games.

“I will still be around at the club for the season,” Bwalya told FARPost on Tuesday afternoon. In the first half of last season, Celtic won 4 and lost 6 of their opening 17 league fixtures of the season.

A couple of highlights from the first half of the season include a 2-0 home win over the then defending league champions Zesco United and ended unbeaten against them after collecting a 1-1 away draw in Ndola.

Celtic also drew 2-2 away against eventual league winners Red Arrows but lost 1-0 at home in the latter phase of the campaign. Nkana and Zanaco were the only big six teams to record back-to-back victories over Bwalya.

Leicester City forward Patson Daka started his career at Kafue before moving to RB Salzburg in 2017. Mamelodi Sundowns were interesting in signing him after tracking him for a while.

The club’s director Lee Kawanu has previously told FARPost that they were always angling for an overseas move for the 23-year-old. The decision is paying off, with the Chipolopolo star gradually establishing himself in one of the world’s best leagues.

Interestingly, when moving the player overseas, the Zambian club included a sell-on clause, which saw them benefitting when he moved to England last year. Fellow Kafue graduate Enock Mwepu also went the same route and is slowly establishing himself at Bright alongside top talents like Jamie Vardy and James Maddison.
