The race for the knockout stages of FIFA World Cup 2026 is beginning to take shape, with Mexico and the United States becoming the first teams to secure their places in the Round of 32.

Co-hosts Mexico have already wrapped up top spot in Group A after winning their opening two matches.

First nation to advance

Mexico’s qualification was confirmed following a 1-0 victory over South Korea, making them the first nation to advance to the knockout phase.

The tournament’s co-hosts beat South Africa 2-0 in their opening match – which was also the opening fixture of the global spectacle.

Joining them in the next round are the United States, who have successfully navigated their way through Group D to secure a place in the last 32 with a game to spare.

The US beat Paraguay 4-1 and Australia 2-0.

Work still to do

While some teams are already celebrating qualification, others still have work to do.

For South African supporters, hopes remain alive as Bafana Bafana prepare for a decisive final Group A encounter against South Korea on Thursday, 25 June at 03:00 (SA time).

Bafana Bafana remain firmly in contention for a knockout-stage berth after earning a valuable point in their 1-1 draw with Czechia.

The result ensured that qualification remains within reach heading into the final round of group-stage fixtures.

Coach Hugo Broos and his players know that a positive result against South Korea could be enough to extend South Africa’s World Cup journey and secure a place among the tournament’s final 32 teams.

With the group stage entering its decisive phase, the pressure is mounting as nations battle for the remaining knockout places.

While Mexico and the United States can already look ahead to the next round, South Africa’s fate will be determined in what promises to be a tense showdown against South Korea.
