Sports superfan Joy ‘Mama Joy’ Chauke took to bragging after she had claimed that she was the “only superfan shown” on TV during the Bafana Bafana vs Mexico match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mama Joy headed to her X account and shared screenshots of herself on a Mexican TV channel during the game, which unfortunately ended in a 2-0 loss for South Africa.

Presumably adding sarcasm, the internet personality stated in her caption, “They needed superfans, not lucky fans.” She added, “Mama Joy is international, yes or no, jealous down.”

Mama Joy’s World Cup presence causes controversy

Mama Joy had earlier voiced her frustration after being left off the list of superfans chosen by Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie to attend the tournament.

The department selected 16 ‘lucky fans’ who entered a competition to attend the World Cup during Bafana Bafana’s opening match. The winners’ (fans from 16 Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs) trip was fully sponsored and included international flights, accommodation, meals, match tickets, and ground transport, reports TimesLive.

Gayton ensured that the initiative received no departmental funding.

In an interview with the Supporters Forum, Mama Joy made it clear that her goal had always been to be at the World Cup, with or without government assistance.

She also claimed that she did not expect any help from Gayton in making the trip possible.

Responding to her remarks, the minister took to social media and wrote: “We got you a husband [referring to ‘Papa Joy’], my sister, let him pay for the love of his life. The Euro is very strong. French men are known to be romantic, let him pay, Sista Joy.”
