Kwanele Mthethwa introduces her character on ‘The Polygamist’

Rising actress Kwanele Mthethwa has given viewers a glimpse into her character in Netflix’s new South African telenovela, The Polygamist.

Kwanele stars as Matipa, a complex and ambitious woman whose relationship with businessman Jonasi Gomora becomes a major source of tension within his marriage and family. The actress describes the character as layered and far more than a typical villain.

Speaking to TV Mzansi about the role, Kwanele revealed that she immersed herself in Sue Nyathi’s novel, on which the series is based, before diving into the script. She said the book helped her gain a deeper understanding of Matipa and the motivations behind her actions.

According to the actress, Matipa is an educated and career-driven woman who makes questionable decisions but cannot be defined by them alone. She believes viewers will discover a character filled with emotional contradictions, vulnerability and depth.

Bringing The Polygamist to life

Produced by Stained Glass Productions, The Polygamist follows self-made CEO Jonasi Gomora as his carefully constructed world begins to unravel under the weight of his personal choices. The drama explores themes of power, marriage, loyalty and desire as the women in Jonasi’s life challenge the image he has created for himself.

The series features an ensemble cast led by Gugu Gumede and S’dumo Mtshali, with Kwanele joining a lineup that includes Kenneth Nkosi, Celeste Ntuli, and S’thandiwe Kgoroge.

Kwanele has expressed excitement about audiences finally getting to experience the show, praising both the cast and crew for their dedication throughout production. She believes fans of the novel and newcomers alike will connect with the story’s emotional twists and compelling characters.

The actress also described the filming process as a rewarding experience, crediting her fellow cast members for creating an environment that allowed everyone to bring their characters to life authentically.

The role marks another major milestone for Kwanele, who continues to build an impressive résumé with appearances in productions such as Isithembiso, The Queen, Umkhokha: The Curse and Lobola Man. With The Polygamist, she takes on one of her most talked-about roles yet, introducing audiences to a character who is sure to spark conversation.
