DJ Tira explains why Afrotainment Marquee won’t feature at 2026 Durban July

For years, DJ Tira’s Afrotainment Marquee has been one of the most sought-after experiences at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, attracting celebrities, influencers and music lovers from across South Africa. However, the popular hospitality venue will not be part of this year’s event, leaving many fans disappointed.

The award-winning DJ and entrepreneur recently addressed the marquee’s absence, confirming that Afrotainment would not be hosting a space at the prestigious race-day spectacle.

Funding challenges behind the decision

Speaking to IOL, DJ Tira clarified that the decision was largely driven by a lack of sponsorship support. He revealed that he did not receive funding from sponsors this year and opted to put the marquee on hold rather than compromise on the experience guests have come to expect.

The move marks a significant shift for one of Durban July’s most recognisable entertainment brands, which has become synonymous with luxury hospitality, live performances and celebrity appearances over the years.

Focus shifts to Durban Hotbox

While Afrotainment will be absent from the racecourse, DJ Tira is far from taking a back seat during Durban July weekend. The music mogul is instead focusing on growing Durban Hotbox, a new entertainment venture launched alongside Amapiano star Kabza De Small.

The event is scheduled to take place on Durban July Day at Durban’s Sunkist Lawns and forms part of a broader expansion strategy that could see the concept rolled out to Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Will Afrotainment return?

Despite the setback, DJ Tira has indicated that the pause is temporary rather than permanent. According to Daily Sun, the Afrotainment founder remains optimistic about bringing the marquee back in future, should the necessary support become available.

For now, Durban July attendees can expect to see the entertainment heavyweight channel his energy into new projects while continuing to be part of one of South Africa’s biggest lifestyle and sporting events.
