Home Affairs Office Coming To Cape Town CBD

Posted on June 8, 2026

Cape Town residents will soon have another place to access Home Affairs services, with a new appointment-only office set to open in the city centre.

The City of Cape Town has officially handed over space at the Civic Centre to the National Department of Home Affairs.

The new office will be located on the second floor of the Civic Centre on Hertzog Boulevard, next to the City’s cash office.

According to the City, the office is expected to open before the end of July 2026, if timelines stay on track.

Appointment-Only System to Cut Queues

The new Home Affairs office will work on an appointment-only basis.

This means residents will need to book before visiting the office. The aim is to reduce long queues and make service delivery smoother.

Construction work to prepare the space is expected to begin soon. The City said building work will take place after hours, over weekends and on public holidays.

This is being done to limit disruption for people who use the Civic Centre.

Why the Civic Centre was Chosen

The Civic Centre is one of the busiest and most central public buildings in Cape Town.

Alderman Theresa Uys, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, said the location makes the office easier to reach.

Residents can access the area using trains, minibus taxis and the MyCiTi bus service.

The City says the project forms part of a partnership with the Department of Home Affairs to bring essential government services closer to people.

Home Affairs Expands Access

Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, said the agreement shows how City-owned property can be used more effectively for public benefit.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber said the new Civic Centre office forms part of the department’s wider “Home Affairs @ home” strategy.

This strategy is focused on bringing services closer to where people live and work.

Schreiber also pointed to the department’s partnerships with private sector sites, including bank branches.

According to the Minister, the department’s bank branch programme has expanded to 171 branches nationwide and has processed more than 182 000 Smart ID applications in under three months.
