Teenager Sentenced to 25 Years for Rape and Murder of 79-Year-Old Woman

A teenager has been handed a 25-year prison sentence for the rape and murder of 79-year-old Valerie Enziar on her farm in Ladismith, Western Cape.

The horrific crimes took place on 14 July 2025 at Doring Kloof farm, where Enziar had lived alone for years. The accused, who was 16 at the time, entered the property on foot after removing a chain from the gate.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to the agreed statement of facts presented in court, the teenager crept up on Enziar while she sat reading on her stoep. He struck her on the neck with a metal chain, knocking her unconscious. He then raped her before strangling her to death using his hands and the same chain.

After the murder, he entered the house and stole her laptop, cell phone, purse, and handbag. He took her horse from the stable, rode it into nearby bush, tied it to a tree, and dumped some of the stolen items. Later, he used her bank card at a local shop to buy a pie and a cooldrink.

Police arrested him and he led investigators to the horse and recovered property.

Court Hears Aggravating Factors

The matter was heard in the Western Cape High Court, sitting at Wynberg Regional Court, before Acting Judge Amanda Van Leeve. State Prosecutor Renée Uys told the court the case reflects South Africa’s ongoing epidemic of gender-based violence, especially against women in rural areas.

Aggravating factors included the victim’s age and vulnerability, the premeditated nature of the attack, and the accused’s prior alleged history of cruelty to animals. The local neighbourhood watch had previously opposed his release into the community.

Mitigation and Sentence

In mitigation, the defence highlighted that the accused was only 16, had reached only Grade 4 at school, and had spent much of his childhood in youth care centres. He pleaded guilty without a full trial, sparing witnesses from testifying, and expressed remorse.

He received 20 years for rape, 25 years for murder, and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. The rape and robbery sentences run concurrently with the murder sentence, resulting in an effective 25 years behind bars. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Acting Judge Van Leeve accepted the plea agreement as just in the circumstances.

This case has once again highlighted the vulnerability of elderly people living alone on farms across South Africa and the devastating impact of violent crime on rural communities.
